The Congress of Mexico passed a bill on April 29, 2006 that decriminalized possession of small amounts of drugs (up to 5g of marijuana) meant for recreational purposes. This bill was intended to relieve cartel-related crime and minimize drug-related arrests. A bill was proposed in 2008 for legalizing the consumption, possession, and commerce of Marijuana for a person over 18. The bill suggested that places that sell alcoholic drinks cannot sell marijuana and the place dealing in marijuana must be at least 1000 meters away from schools. In the year 2009, the country decriminalized “personal use” possession of up to 5 grams of marijuana.
